Every now and then, there is a community, environmental, or human rights defense struggle that manages to break through the complex, fortified barriers of global corporate impunity and corruption, criminality, and deceit. The Hudbay Minerals/CGN lawsuits in Canada, and the parallel but separate criminal trial in Guatemala, are one such struggle.
The issues at hand – mining-caused repression (including an assassination, shooting-paralyzing, and rapes); illegal community evictions and destruction; corruption and collusion with governments, private security guards, police and military – are identical or similar to so many past and present cases around the world.
